Symptoms of stomach discomfort and gastritis
Stomach discomfort and gastrointestinal problems are very common. The main symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and loss of appetite.
Causes of gastrointestinal discomfort
In Hong Kong, gastrointestinal upset is mainly caused by two factors – infection and inflammation. Infections usually involve parasites or bacteria, such as Giardia , Campylobacter , E. coli, and Salmonella . Some infections can be transmitted to humans, but good basic hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and regular cleaning of pet feces, can prevent the spread of parasites or bacteria. Gastroenteritis caused by gastrointestinal irritation is also a common cause. Many pets have sensitive stomachs, and sudden changes in diet or consuming too many spicy foods can cause intestinal inflammation and problems.
What should I do if my pet has a stomach problem?
If your pet's gastrointestinal symptoms are not too severe and its energy level is relatively good, you can observe it for a day to see if the gastroenteritis will gradually recover on its own. During this time, you should feed it low-irritant food and make sure it drinks plenty of water.
Basic home treatment includes a light diet for a few days (such as boiled chicken and white rice) and the use of stomach protectants.
If your pet exhibits severe symptoms such as lethargy, frequent vomiting (e.g., more than 4-5 times in 12 hours), or blood in vomit or stool, it should be examined by a veterinarian immediately. Treatment typically includes antiemetics and antidiarrheal medications, and may include antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs. In severe cases, if your pet becomes dehydrated, hospitalization and intravenous fluids may be necessary. If in doubt, you can call your veterinary clinic for more information.
Food specially formulated for pets with sensitive stomachs
There are many pet foods on the market specifically designed for pets with sensitive stomachs. These foods aim to reduce irritation to the digestive system and strengthen its protective barrier. They are easily digestible and can reduce vomiting and diarrhea caused by sensitive stomachs. If your pet has food sensitivities, you should also avoid giving them strongly flavored treats. You can add probiotics or a small amount of yogurt to their diet to supplement their needs and improve their overall gut health.
